Being one of the most widely eaten fruits in the world, the banana has become more prominent in both its ripe and unripe state.

When unripe, it consists of 21% starch, on the other hand, only 1% starch in found in a ripe banana. This is because as they ripen, a number of chemical processes convert the starch to sugars such as fructose, glucose, and sucrose.

Bananas are really great to eat before and after each meal and exercise sessions because they prevent muscle cramp and enhances the contraction of muscles. They are also helpful in providing your body with much-needed nutrient, energy, and vitamins after a strenuous exercise.

They are highly nutritious and readily eaten, and are generally composed of sugars (fructose, glucose, and sucrose), in addition to fiber. Subsequently, they are among the best sources of energy that gives not only instant boost but more elongated boosts.

Essential Vitamins in Bananas and there Function

  •  Soluble vegetable fiber and insoluble vegetable fiber – energy boosters.

  • Vitamin B1 is much needed for energy metabolism, supports appetite, and enhances the function of central nervous system.

  • Vitamin B2 which also helps in energy metabolism improves skin health and supports normal vision.

  • Bananas are super rich in Vitamin B6 (also known as Pyridoxine) which helps digestion and absorption of proteins and fats. They also help to make blood cells. Lack of vitamin B6 is accompanied by inflammation of the tongue, peripheral neuropathy, and lesions on the corners of the mouth and around the lips.

  •  Vitamin C has antioxidant properties that help the body to use calcium and other nutrients effectively to build bones and blood vessels.

  • Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects the white and red blood cells. It also fortifies the body’s immune system and is widely used in DNA synthesis.

Do yourself a favor and take advantage of the many health benefits of bananas today!

1. Tension

Our metabolism rate increases while we are tense, however, the vitamin Bs in our body will soothe the tensed nervous system. Also, potassium content in banana can help to adjust our heart rate and help on replacing whatever we have consumed. Our metabolism rate will be slower when our heart rate is reduced.

2. Strong Bones

Strong bones are essential to a healthy life. The high potassium contents in banana have positive effects on our bones and kidneys. The high levels of sodium in a typical Western diet may lead to an increase of calcium excretion. Bananas, however, counteracts the calcium excretion, thereby improving bone strength and reducing the risk of kidney stones.

3. Digestion

Bananas’ positive effects on digestion are due to its ability to reduce the effect of both constipation and diarrhea. Rich in dietary fibers, bananas ensures smooth bowel movements and normalizes the digestive system. They also contain potassium that will restore depleted electrolytes during diarrhea.

4. Obesity/Weight Loss

Obesity is many caused as a result of pressure; people consume more food to release pressure. Due to the high level of starch in banana, you are sure to have a sense of satiety after consuming banana. Moreover, it takes time for the body to convert the starch into carbohydrates, so you don’t have to worry about the excessive accumulation of heat. From this view point, banana can also be taken to lower the sugar level in our blood.

5. Mood Improvement/Ease Depression

Bananas contain an amino acid known as “tryptophan” which is essential for growth and normal metabolism. It can trigger the production of 6-serotonin to ease depression and improve mood to make people live calmer, cheerful and happy.

Tryptophan is naturally not produced by the body; the only source of this amino acid is through your diet, and one of the easiest and economical ways to get tryptophan is by eating a banana. Besides mood improvement and depression elimination, bananas can also help you dispel the irritable and pessimistic emotions.

6. Insect Bites

Banana stem juice and mashed banana when applied as a topical paste relieve mosquito and other insect bites. This is because of the anthelmintic property of the banana root which helps to fight parasitic worms. It has also been proven in improving bronchitis and reducing bronchoceles.

7. Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Bananas contain a high level of vitamin B6 which plays an important role in the human body. You get about 20% of the daily requirement of vitamin B6 from a medium sized banana. Vitamin B6 has anti-inflammatory properties that can forestall type 2 diabetes and promote better cardiovascular health.

Also, the rich content of potassium in banana can help in maintaining the acid-bas balance, as well as the sodium-potassium balance in the human body. This result is very helpful to the patient experiencing cardiovascular or hypertension and cerebrovascular ailment. Also, banana assumes an important role in the formation of white blood cells, which is much needed by the immune system to fight infections.

8. Prevents Gastrointestinal ulcer

Bananas have also been proven to reduce gastric acid levels. Phenylbutazone is taken by patients who suffer from gastrointestinal ulcer, and this may lead to stomach bleeding. Because of its high sugar content and soft texture, a banana will ease the pain and also neutralize the gastric acid. It can also stimulate the growth and reproduction of mucous membrane and gastric mucosal cells to protect the stomach.

9. Hangover

Drinking a banana milk shake sweetened with honey is a good way to cure a hangover. The honey helps to replenish the depleted blood-sugar levels while the banana soothes the stomach; the milk re-hydrates the whole body.

10. Healthy Kidneys

The kidney is an important part of the body that greatly benefits from the consumption of banana. The human body is made up of two kidneys; however, when one becomes damaged due to excessive smoking, drinking or injury, the other kidney will also be affected since they benefit from the same blood supply.

Though, a range of fruits were proven to have positive effects on the kidneys, yet bananas have the most positive effects on the kidneys. These benefits continued to manifest when patients with kidney issues consumed bananas over other fruits.

Hence, frequent consumption of bananas may be helpful for your kidneys. The high levels of antioxidant phenolic compounds in banana help the kidneys in the detoxification of carcinogens or potential cancer causing agents, more effectively. According to the International Journal of Cancer, consuming whole fruits and vegetables daily (such as bananas), is a great way to protect and extend the health and life of a person’s kidney.

11. Cure For Typhoid

Consuming ripe banana is a natural remedy for typhoid. Just mash a ripe banana and add 1 teaspoon of honey in it. Taking this mixture twice daily for 2 months will ensure the weakness and fever due to typhoid is settled in a month.

12. High Blood Pressure

In addition to being a great natural source of energy, bananas offer many other health benefits. It contains no fat, zero cholesterol, and no sodium. As well as being a good source of magnesium, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber, bananas are rich in vitamin B6. Meaning, bananas can help maintain your blood pressure, prevent high blood pressure, and strokes.

This is because the ideal diet to lower the blood pressure and minimize any chance of stroke is a high level of potassium but low sodium (salt) level. The level of potassium in the banana is relatively high (about 4,673 mg), however, is very low in sodium (about 1 mg); in this manner containing an ideal proportion for maintaining normal levels of blood pressure.

Irrespective of the many benefits of bananas, they shouldn’t be consumed in excess. After all, excessive intake of anything isn’t recommended.

When taking beta-blockers, high potassium foods such as bananas should be consumed in moderation. Beta-blockers are a kind of medication most commonly prescribed for heart disease - can increase the potassium levels in the blood.

Banana is also rich in fiber. Eating too much fiber can lead to stomach cramps, bloating, and gas.

For those whose kidneys are not fully functional, consuming too much banana (potassium) could be fatal as the kidneys would be unable to remove excess potassium from the blood.

A medical report published in the New England Journal of Medicine affirms that a consistent intake of banana in long term will reduce the chance of strokes by 40%.

Health benefits of bananas are so much that I can’t completely specify. Some of these health benefits make them a cheap remedy to a long term illness. I hope someone is inspired today; eat more bananas and start enjoying the many benefits.

Now let me explain the asterisk at the top of the page headline because you may have been wondering why it was there.

What I need to tell you now is that NOT every one will see success with bananas as we are all bio individuals and as such, bananas react differently and is chemically processed differently from one person to the next.

Have you ever heard the saying "one man's medicine is another man's poison?"  Well the same concept applies here too.  Specifically, I am referring to your blood type and how different foods are treated on the inside by different blood types.

Have you ever noticed that two different people can eat the same thing and experience different feelings afterwards?  Well that is what I am talking about here.  Let me further educate you on how bananas historically is handled by different blood types.

If you happen to be blood type A, YOU should actually avoid bananas for the following reasons:

  • Bananas contain lectin or other agglutinin: metabolic inhibitor; provokes abnorman blood reaction.
  • However, if you are a NON-secretor, then bananas are neutral for you (meaning they are neither a medicine not a poison - just a regular food).

If you happen to be blood type B, bananas are considered a beneficial for you for the following reasons:

If you happen to be blood type O, bananas are a beneficial for you as well for the following reason:
  • Contains an agglutanin that modifies disease susceptibility.

Now if you happen to be blood type AB, then bananas are no good for you either for the following reason:
  • Bananas contain lectin or other agglutinin: metabolic inhibitor; provokes abnormal blood reaction.

True story, I myself used to consume bananas every day it seems because I thought it was the healthy thing to do and indeed it is, but not for everyone like me.  Because I am type AB!

So let's recap what you have been educated on.  If you are blood types B or O, then bananas are your friend and you should have no worries of any negative effects, that is of course, your blood has been analysed for allergens and it revealed that you are actually allergic to this amazing fruit!

Get it?  Got it?  Good.
